Evaluation of the effects of calabash chalk on the haematological profile of Wistar rats

Calabash chalk is a naturally geophagic mineral composed mainly of fossilized seashells or an artificial preparation combination clay, mud, and sand. It one the widely consumed earth materials in practice geophagia. The present study aimed at evaluating effects oral administration calabash on haematological parameters body weight using Wistar rat models. Ten (10) healthy female mice twenty (20) adults rats weighing 20-30 g 160 -200 were used for determination LD50 experimental respectively. Locally sourced was orally administered to 400, 600 800 mg/kg respectively twenty-eight (28) days. Haematological determined standard automated procedure. result shows that there significant decrease red blood cell count, haemoglobin concentration, packed volume, total white neutrophils, lymphocytes, mid-range absolute platelet counts among groups compared control (p<0.05). Also, reduction percentage changes animals has shown despite wide safety margin chalk, it can depress haematopoiesis by reducing cell, counts.
